Aircraft Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems

Scope

To develop guidelines to support qualification and certification of hydrogen fuel cell systems for civil aircraft applications. The Working Group will:

  • Develop safety guidelines related to issues of hydrogen (and oxygen) fuel cell integration on board aircraft.

  • Review of existing power system functions and installation / safety requirements and review of these requirements against fuel cell characteristics (e.g., fire detection and extinguishing).

  • Consider associated issues of aircraft infrastructure requirements.

Status The activity began in October 2008, met twice in 2009, and plans three meetings in 2010. The Working Group is working toward deliverables by the end of 2011 to allow EASA and FAA to start with rulemaking activities.
